“How sad”, he said,
“Where be your friends?
“Boy you look, lonely”
“Me sad?”,thought I,
“Am I really?
Am I really, lonely?”
“I had some friends,
Where are they now?
(hmm…)They all seem to have left me.”
“One moment back,
they all were here.
But now I see, nobody.”
“Where are they now?
Where have they gone?
And why it never, occurred to me?”
“Hey Sir”, said I,
“I am all alone.
I have me as my only, company”
“Hey Sir, said I,
“I am not alone
“I have me as my, accompany.”
And as I said these words,
thought I, “But,
Do I even know, who is me?”

I think its high time now, that we talk about it.
Its there and will always be. It can be hidden no more. It should come out – and now, is the right time for it.
It encapsulates and represents almost anything or everything, that there can be – but, not more than one at a time.
Sometime its a man. Sometime its not. Sometimes its even naught. Then there are times when its naughty. But all in all its more often than not – harmless.
Its perhaps everywhere
But, in the form that we know about it, one finds it only in english speaking areas of the planet.
Its a part of our daily life.
It doesn really start anything.
It only follows.
But, it stays thereafter.
It brings memories.
It creates associations in our mind. Our mind -what a creation! Only the mind can grasp what it is. The mind can see, can feel, can understand what it is.
But, as a person marches towards senility, it starts overpowering him. It becomes just too much a part of an oldman’s life. All he utters about is it. So much does it increase that other people are just not able to understand what it is. They try, but they can’t really grasp at all what it is. This is because the man grows older, he becomes more and more forgetful. So, he often forgots even the Golden Rule about it: “it doesnt start anything – it follows!”.
But, no matter what people say – its crucially important. Its what makes humans, the way they are – the way they understand, the way they create things, the way they lead their lives towards it, the way they think once & for all and then just keep following it for the rest of their lives.
On the other hand, though, it depicts the very finitude that symbolises humanity. How very often, they can see it, they can feel it- but just cant put words to it.And if you wondering still, what it is. Then, thats it for you – at its very best!

“While only a few thousand people bought a Velvet Underground record upon their initial release, almost every single one of them was inspired to start a band”, was the remark on the band ‘The Velvet Underground’ by the famous British musician Brian Eno.
So, there is not much doubt that Velvet Underground was one of the most influential bands in the rock history. Though the genre of the band is not clearly defined, they are mostly put into the genre of either experimental-rock or proto-punk. Experimental rock because of the way they pushed the boundaries of so-called normal composition, performance or rock-n-roll sound; and Proto-punk because of their massive influence on the next generation punk bands, though their own sound was not really punk. But, I feel that they fit best into the psychedelic genre, because of the overall mood and experience that one gets when one listens to their music.
The two star members of the rock band were Lou Reed and John Cale. Interestingly, these two had almost completely contrasting creative impulses. While Reed was more on the conventional side, Cale had more of experimental demeanour. In fact, when Cale left the band in late 1968, with that the band lost its harsh, abrasive tendencies – so much so visible in songs like “Heroin”, “Venus in furs”, “White Light White Heat” , “Sister Ray” etc.
There is whole lot of trivia & interpretations with songs like “Venus in furs”, “Sister Ray” and “White Light White Heat” worth reading.
Also, if you look at their songs, their stylistic range is immense. Some of my favourite Velvet Underground songs:
– Venus in furs ; White Light White Heat ; Heroin; Sister Ray
– I ll be your mirror, Pale blue eyes, Take a walk on the wild side, Lisa says
– Rock and roll, Femme fatale, There she goes again, Run run run, Who loves the sun
